Replacing Soda & Swine, Fortunate Son opened in late 2020 and is definitely one of the best Chinese options in North Park and surrounding. They did a great job with the decor on the inside, it feels as if you’re eating under a garden and you can tell they pay a lot of attention to detail with the design. Parking in this area can be a bit tricky, North Park does not really have many parking lots available, so your best bet will be free street parking. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, but the best tables are indoor. The other tables are on the street in the front so it can get a bit noisy, and there are flies. Our server was very polite and everything is family style so everything comes out as it is ready. That is nice sometimes but one issue we had was that we were a group of four and one person‘s two items did not come until well after everyone else had theirs so timing can be a bit tricky here. Aside from that the menu is not very large, but it does have a lot of great options on it. I chose the Beef & Broccoli and really enjoyed it. We were seated quickly with reservations , which was a great start to the evening. Could also be as we were there at 10 PM. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful—it’s one of the prettiest and the ambiance is definitely its strongest feature. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didn’t quite live up to the setting. The service was okay but felt a bit inattentive and lacking. As for the food, the chow mein was a flavorful dish, but everything else we ordered was fairly plain and underwhelming. If you’re looking for great Chinese food, I don’t think this would be my first recommendation. Overall, it’s a gorgeous spot for the atmosphere, but the food didn’t leave enough of an impression for me to return.

I’ve been craving some good Chinese food, and while I’ve probably never had truly authentic Chinese cuisine straight from the provinces, this place was pretty damn good. First things first: take an Uber because parking is rough, and bring a fan or dress light because it gets pretty warm inside. That said, the food was absolutely delicious. The kitchen was a little slow, but it wasn’t a big deal I was in great company, so the wait didn’t bother me. Every dish was packed with flavor. The only thing I can honestly say is… my fried rice is still better. 😂 Overall, we’d definitely recommend giving this place a try. Just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time!

We visited Fortunate Son during our trip to San Diego and ordered the crab rangoons, bok choy, scallion braised beef, and lo mein noodles. The bok choy and scallion braised beef were definitely the highlights of the meal. Both were flavorful and well prepared. The crab rangoons and lo mein were good, but nothing particularly memorable. Overall, the food was enjoyable, but it didn’t stand out compared to the other restaurants we visited during our trip. One disappointment was the alcoholic beverage selection, which was very limited compared to the variety offered by similar restaurants. It’s a solid spot, but it wasn’t one of the standout dining experiences from our visit to San Diego. The atmosphere is nice and can make for some aesthetically pleasing photos.

Slightly better but doubly expensive Panda Express, just with a great ambiance. Food: 3/5 The star of the show was the Honey Walnut Shrimp. The shrimp were huge, and the caramelized walnuts were broken up and sprinkled all over so you could taste it in every bite. The portions were alright--three dishes were enough for two people. The Orange Chicken felt like there was more dough than chicken. I wouldn't say the food blew my mind; it's just a step up from Panda Express, honestly. Service: 3.5/5 Our server was nice! The waitstaff made themselves available if you needed anything while dining. We made a reservation online and indicated it was for a special occasion, but nothing special was done. We didn't expect anything, really, but it doesn't make too much sense to have the option to mark our dinner as a special event on the reservation website. Atmosphere: 4.5/5 It was warm and dimly lit, which made the dinner feel very romantic. We really had dinner by candlelight. The music was a bit loud where we sat--the speaker was right above us.
